Why Do Some Memories Feel Like They Happened Yesterday?

I learned that our brain doesn’t store every memory the same way.

When something is very painful or frightening, the brain can hold onto that memory more strongly.

That’s why, even years later, a place, a sound, or even a smell can bring back those same feelings.

Here’s what has been helping me.

I don’t have to fight those memories.

I don’t have to pretend they never happened.

Instead, I gently remind myself,

“That happened in the past. I’m safe now.”

Then I focus on creating new, happy memories.

The more positive experiences I have today, the more my mind has something new to remember.

That’s why I keep doing simple things that help me feel safe and happy:

  • Spending time with kind, supportive people.
  • Volunteering, because it gives me connection and helps me feel less pressure.
  • Moving my body.
  • Writing down my thoughts and sharing.
  • Learning new skills that make me feel excited.
  • Doing something kind for others, because it makes me feel good too.

Each positive experience teaches my brain something new.

Not every person will hurt me.

Not every situation is unsafe.

Healing isn’t about erasing the past.

It’s about giving our brain enough safe and positive experiences to realise that today is different from yesterday.

Reflection questions:

  • What helps me feel safe today?
  • What is one positive experience I can create for myself this week?
  • How can I remind myself that today is different from the past?
