Hello everyone,
Today, I want to share some simple questions that have helped me become mentally stronger.
Firstly, I ask myself some helpful questions when I notice negative thoughts creeping in. Questions like, “Why am I having this negative thought? Is it necessary or helpful? Does it offer a solution?” If my thoughts don’t provide satisfactory answers to these questions, I simply stop dwelling on them.
Additionally, I question the truth of the thought. If it’s not true, I choose not to believe it, as what I believe will ultimately control me. For example, if I believe my partner is wonderful and the best person because he has supported my family, always believed in me, and never judges or hurts people, then he will be. I just find the true reasons. This shift in belief allows me to focus on more positive and empowering thoughts.
The critical part is to counter the negative thought with reasons why it’s not true and an alternative, positive belief. For instance, if I think I’m a bad person because I sometimes do silly things, I remind myself that it’s not true because as human beings, we are not perfect and we all make mistakes. Alternatively, I believe that I am a good person because I help others when they need my assistance, I don’t hurt people, and I pay my taxes. Simply put, I provide reasons why I am a good person. This shift in belief creates positive thoughts and feelings.
Another practical question I ask myself is, “What will make me feel better?” Whether it’s a 30-minute bath, playing the piano, or spending time with my bunny, I choose an activity that uplifts my mood.
Reflecting on these questions helps me realize that negative thoughts are often unnecessary and only bring me down. So, I choose to let them go and focus on more positive and empowering beliefs.
If you have any other tactics for avoiding negative emotions, please share them in the comments below.
Let’s support each other in cultivating positive mental well-being.
