Not Here to Solve: My Counselling Course Takeaways #1

What I’ve Been Learning in My Counselling Course – 5 Months In

It’s already been five months since I started my counselling course, and I’ve learned some solid insights along the way. I’m really enjoying it, even though there have been lots of assessments! Still, I’ve learned so much from doing them properly. Here’s a summary of the key things I’ve taken from the course so far:

1. Don’t Give Advice or Try to “Fix” Clients
One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is that counselling isn’t about giving advice or offering solutions. Clients are the experts in their own lives. They often already know what needs to change. My role is to support them in figuring things out, recognising their own strengths and values.
If I jump in and fix things for them, they may quickly forget the strategies and the same concerns could come back later. But if they work through it themselves, they’ll learn and grow in a much deeper way.

2. Be Genuine and Authentic
It’s important to be real with clients. Don’t pretend to be supportive—be supportive. Clients can sense whether you’re being genuine or not. Be honest about what you can and can’t help with. If you don’t have all the tools, it’s okay to say so. Be yourself. There’s no need to act like you have it all together—people connect with realness, not perfection.

3. Be Confident and Let Go of Fear
I’ve also learned not to worry about being judged. I’m here to support clients, not to be perfect. I can’t control what others think of me—but I can choose how I respond. Instead of wasting energy on fear or doubt, I focus on being a helpful tool, using effective strategies and knowledge.
Let people judge or gossip. That’s on them. I choose to stay calm, confident, and focused on doing good for others.

There’s so much more I’m learning in this course, and I’ll keep sharing as I go.

Thanks for reading!
