My mum wakes up at 4:30 a.m. every day to attend her morning church service. That inspired me. Since 2019—when I started focusing on personal development (and when the pandemic began)—I decided to wake up around 5:00 a.m. too.
Why? Because I noticed I’m more productive early in the morning. My brain works better, and I find it easier to concentrate.
So, I asked my mum, “How do you manage to wake up at 4:30 a.m. every day?”
Her answer was simple:
“I pray as soon as I wake up and move my body straight away—like feeding the dog and cats or watering the plants.”
That was it! No complicated routine.
How I Applied Her Simple Method
I tried her approach and adapted it to suit my day.
Here’s what my morning looks like:
I wake up around 5:00 a.m.
I do a quick 5–10 minute meditation (no longer—otherwise I fall back asleep).
I feed my bunny and clean around his area (there’s always hay scattered around).
I wash the dishes.
I do a 5-minute stretch using my exercise ball.
I make my favourite English Breakfast tea but I don’t drink it straight away; I wait until I’m fully awake. This is because I don’t want to rely on caffeine to wake up my body or brain.
These small tasks help me start moving, and it works for me—just like it works for my mum.
A Bonus Tip That Helps Me
When I wake up, my body often doesn’t want to move. So I talk to myself and say:
“You can have a nap this afternoon—let’s just get up for now.”
This little self-talk actually helps me get out of bed.
If I do feel sluggish later in the day, I take a 30-minute nap in the afternoon.
Another Simple Habit That Works
I set an alarm for 5:00 a.m. every single day—7 days a week. Even if I occasionally sleep past it, I still wake up to turn it off. That moment of waking up—even for just a minute—helps train my body clock.
It’s amazing how our brains and bodies adapt.
That’s my simple method for waking up around 5:00 a.m.
